Summer Toy Trends 2026: What Changes in Outdoor Play, and When

We are a manufacturer, not a market research firm, so this is not a report on what sold industry-wide. It is what changes in our own order book as the outdoor season arrives, and what those changes mean if you are stocking for it.

The season arrives in layers, not at once

The first orders of the year are the considered ones. Buyers planning a summer range order the large items first — water cannons, motorised bubble guns, machines — because those are the products a shop commits to before the weather decides anything.

Then the season opens and the orders change character. They get smaller, more frequent and more focused on turnover: wands, mini sticks, solution. The same buyer who ordered one cannon in March orders six cartons of wands in June.

Understanding those two phases is more useful than any prediction, because it tells you what to buy first and what to keep buying.

Water play keeps growing, and it is the format that decides

Water guns remain the centre of the outdoor season, but the interesting shift is inside the category rather than around it. Buyers are moving away from the plain pistol towards shapes — trucks, rockets, animals — because a child picks by appearance and a shop shelf is a competition between appearances.

The other shift is size. Small pistols still sell, and always will, but the units that carry a summer order’s margin are the 46-51cm cannons with multi-nozzle spray. They look like more, and in retail they are.

Bubble play crosses over

The line between a bubble toy and a water toy has blurred. A motorised bubble gun and a water blaster now share a shape and often a shelf, and buyers increasingly treat them as one category of “outdoor play” rather than two.

That is worth acting on. If you are stocking water guns, the bubble gun that looks like one is the natural add-on sale, and it works with the same customer at a lower price point.

What does not change

Solution. Every format we have discussed is useless without it, and it is the one product in the summer season that is bought again by the same customer mid-season. A stocking plan without a solution line is a plan that stops working in July.

The other constant is that parents buy what keeps a child occupied outdoors for the longest. That has been the whole market for as long as we have been in it, and it has not shifted.

What we would tell a buyer planning the season

Order the large items first and don’t delay them. Keep the small, cheap and repeatable lines flowing through the season rather than front-loading them. Include solution in both orders.

Our minimum is 5 pieces per design and designs mix, which makes a first season a cheap thing to test. WhatsApp: +86 173 4881 6397.
