How Many Water Guns Fit in a 20ft Container? Real Packing Guide for Importers

“How many fit in a 20ft container” has no single answer. It depends entirely on the carton, and the carton is decided by the product inside it. A carton of 41cm electric rifles and a carton of pocket pistols are different worlds.

What we can do is show the arithmetic with real cartons from our own range, so you can run the same calculation on whatever you are buying.

Start with the container, not the product

A standard 20ft general purpose container has an internal volume of roughly 33 cubic metres. A 40ft general purpose is about 68, and a 40ft high cube about 76.

Those are the theoretical figures. In practice you never load to the last centimetre — cartons are not a liquid, and the door aperture, the corner posts and the way boxes stack all take their share. Plan on around 85% of the internal volume and you will not be far out. For a 20ft that means roughly 28 cubic metres of cartons.

Then do the arithmetic

Carton volume is length × width × height in metres. Divide the planning volume by it and you have your carton count; multiply by the pieces per carton and you have your order.

Here it is for seven real cartons from our catalogue:

Product Carton (cm) CBM Pcs/ctn 20ft 40ft
Automatic electric water gun, 41cm 53 × 37 × 48 0.094 24 ~264 ctn / 6,300 pcs ~616 ctn / 14,800 pcs
Space Blaster LED pistol 58 × 48 × 84 0.234 144 ~119 ctn / 17,100 pcs ~248 ctn / 35,700 pcs
46cm Capybara Gatling cannon 83 × 50 × 86 0.357 96 ~78 ctn / 7,500 pcs ~162 ctn / 15,600 pcs
49cm Cement Mixer cannon 91 × 53 × 70 0.338 120 ~82 ctn / 9,800 pcs ~171 ctn / 20,500 pcs
Capybara bubble gun 66 × 34 × 85 0.191 360 ~146 ctn / 52,600 pcs ~304 ctn / 109,400 pcs
Capybara bubble gun, blister 71 × 31 × 76 0.167 192 ~167 ctn / 32,100 pcs ~346 ctn / 66,400 pcs
Capybara / donut bubble wand 52.5 × 52 × 39 0.106 144 ~262 ctn / 37,700 pcs ~544 ctn / 78,300 pcs

Treat these as planning figures, not a booking confirmation. Real loading depends on the carton, the pallet decision and the person stacking the box.

The part most people get wrong

Volume alone overestimates. Cartons are rigid, and how many you fit on the floor of the container sets the ceiling.

Take the 53 × 37 × 48 carton above. By volume, 28 cubic metres suggests 297 cartons. Lay it out on the floor of a 20ft — internal length 5.9m, width 2.35m — and you get 66 cartons per layer, four layers high, so 264 cartons. The floor pattern, not the volume, is your real limit.

That is why a supplier quoting you container quantities from a volume calculation is usually overstating it. Ask for the carton dimensions and do the floor pattern yourself, or ask your forwarder to do it before you commit to a quantity.

What to ask for before you commit

Three numbers, from every product you are pricing:

  • Carton dimensions in centimetres
  • Pieces per carton
  • Gross weight per carton

With those three you can work out units per container, freight per unit and whether the load stays inside the road weight limits at destination. Without them you are comparing products on unit price alone, which is the least important number in the shipment.

One more thing on weight: a container is limited by both volume and payload, and it is usually volume that runs out first on toys. But heavy items — large water cannons with big reservoirs — can hit the weight limit while there is still floor space left, which is why gross weight belongs in the same email as the carton size.

Mixing products in one container

You are not limited to one product per carton, or one product per container. Mixed loads are normal and are usually the best use of a first order: a few pallets of cannons, a few of pocket pistols, and some bubble toys to fill the gaps. Bubble guns in particular are compact for their value, which makes them good filler around bulkier cartons.

Our minimum is 5 pieces per design and designs mix freely, so the constraint on your first container is the container itself, not our minimums.

Tell us what you are considering and your destination port, and we will send carton dimensions, pieces per carton and weights for each item so you can run these numbers yourself. WhatsApp: +86 173 4881 6397.
